Mr. Jefferson had a curtilage
With a fence around its edge.
Everything that to his house pertained
Was in that curtilage contained
(Like his garden, sheds and hedge.)
Stables, slave quarters, things like those
Were within the fence enclosed.
'Twas with all necessities complete,
Ten acres on his Poplar Forest retreat,
Things to fill whatever needs arose.
